Shirayuki, a young girl, was born with unique apple-red hair. She meets a famous but foolish prince named Raji, who immediately falls in love with the extraordinary girl and wants her to become his concubine. Shirayuki unceremoniously cuts off her hair and flees to the neighbouring countryside.
As she wanders through the woods, she meets a boy named Zen, whose wounds she heals, but who is then poisoned by an apple meant for Shirayuki. Meanwhile, Prince Raji sends out his handlers to search for the girl. What will become of Shirayuki? And what kind of person is Zen in reality?
Based on the manga by Sorata Akizuki, which has been published in Japan since August 2006 and in Germany since April 2010 by TOKYOPOP, this romantic shoujo thriller from the renowned studio BONES ("FMA:B", "Blood Blockade Battlefront", "Noragami") starts with the 12-part first season, which began in Japan in the summer season of 2015. The adventurous and romantic story is continued in season 2 with 12 episodes, which were shown on Japanese TV in winter season 2016.
Director Masahiro Ando (episode director for "Wolf's Rain" and director for "Hanasaku Iroha" and "Zetsuen no Tempest") is experienced when it comes to quieter and character-focused material. He is also an accomplished Kley animator and has assembled an experienced and well-rehearsed team to atmospherically stage the elaborately designed figures and costumes (created by Kumiko Takahashi, who already provided wonderful designs for "Card Captor Sakura"). Charismatic characters, a harmonious world and a successful mix of drama and romance transport the viewer into a modern fairy tale.
